Armadillo, CLT Sound Pavilion
The Armadillo is a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Sound Pavilion, representing a pioneering project in innovative timber construction and acoustic design. Emerging from a collaboration between ConstruktCLT, Xilonor CLT, Houghton Music & Arts Festival, Unknown Works, Studio Allen, Rothoblaas, ARUP, Charcoalblue, Smart Space Group, Klimstar, and Rubio Monocoat, this project epitomizes the fusion of architectural ingenuity and collaborative effort.
We are thrilled to announce the successful showcase of our pavilion at the London Festival of Architecture, held in the heart of Trinity Buoy Wharf with guest speakers from Unknown Works, Rothoblaas, Studio Allen and ConstruktCLT. Overlooking the Thames River, this iconic location, known for its rich cultural heritage and its role as a testing site for electric lighthouses where Michael Faraday conducted many experiments, provided a perfect backdrop for our innovative structure. The pavilion contributed to the vibrant atmosphere of creativity and craftsmanship that defines this tranquil riverside spot. Honouring the site's legacy of innovation, the pavilion's design featured a pioneering type of timber construction.

The event featured a series of insightful talks on innovations in timber construction, hosted by the team behind the pavilion. Held within the picturesque waterside setting of Trinity Buoy Wharf, the talks attracted a diverse audience of architecture and sustainability enthusiasts.
Talks Schedule
1:30pm - The Design and Build of the Armadillo The team showcased the research and design embedded within the pavilion’s structure, highlighting innovations in prefabrication, CLT construction, and acoustic performance design. A Q&A session and a walk around the pavilion followed.
2:15pm - From Forest to Factory Hosted by Xilonor, this panel discussed the future of cross-laminated timber, from timber selection to the development of new materials. The session explored innovative solutions for timber construction and water coexistence, design factors, and the path of mass timber.
3:00pm - Demountability and Re-use Experts discussed sustainable practices in timber construction, modular construction, prefabrication, and the design of demountable timber components. The focus was on enhancing circular economy principles and minimizing waste. A Q&A session and a walk around the pavilion followed.
4:00pm - A Conversation with Longplayer Longplayer Trust Chair Ella Finer and Producer Imogen Free reflected on the 1,000-year-long musical composition housed in the Trinity Buoy Wharf lighthouse. A durational performance by Ansuman Biswas took place from 9am to 5pm that day.
5:00pm - Performances The pavilion hosted a series of audio and musical performances, capping off a day filled with innovation and creativity.
