Dezeen longlisted and winner of New London Architecture Award in 2023, CLT House involved a single storey rear extension on a home in East London. The clients opted for cross-laminated timber (CLT) for its known flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
Following three days of installation, the CLT panels were insulated, coated, and painted in a canary yellow to create a striking stepped rear extension and cubic front porch. Inside, exposed CLT panels create a warm atmosphere within an otherwise industrial material palette of stainless steel and polished concrete.
The rear extension houses a new, open plan kitchen and dining area with built-in CLT seating and reading nooks. The exposed CLT grid ceiling frames recessed aluminium lighting tracks, which illuminate the extension with ambient light and accentuate the natural texture of the internal timber.
